Enter your income and filing status to see which projected Medicare income tier applies in 2027. The calculator connects your MAGI with the 2027 IRMAA brackets and shows how close the entered amount is to another boundary. Its default mode uses estimates. A separate reference mode uses official 2026 figures. Read the mode and status labels before interpreting a result: a projected tier can be useful for planning even while the actual 2027 surcharge remains unknown.

Gather the income figure before you begin

SSA generally bases 2027 IRMAA on the federal return for 2025. Look for adjusted gross income and tax-exempt interest on that return, then add them to obtain IRMAA MAGI. Do not enter taxable income after deductions, annual spending, the balance of a retirement account, or just your monthly Social Security deposit. These amounts answer different questions.

Use the filing status associated with the income year. For married people filing separately, the calculator also needs to know whether the spouses lived together at any time during that year. If they lived apart throughout the year, the single income schedule applies. This residence rule can change the schedule even when the entered MAGI stays the same.

Understand the result cards

The tier result compares the entered income with the selected year’s boundaries. The next-boundary result shows the remaining room under that boundary when one exists. A result at the top of the schedule has no higher boundary to display. Review the table alongside the result if your income is close to a boundary, because the exact inclusion rule matters.

IRMAA is a tier adjustment. Once income crosses a boundary, the next applicable adjustment applies in full; it is not a tax on just the excess income. The calculator does not predict later tax corrections or investment distributions. An amount that seems comfortably inside an estimated tier can move when your actual MAGI or the official schedule becomes available.

Separate a premium from a surcharge

The standard Part B premium estimate for 2027 is $209.50 per month. That projection is not an official CMS premium announcement. The 2027 Part B and Part D IRMAA surcharge amounts remain not yet released in our data, so the calculator does not fill the gaps with a prior-year charge. An unknown amount is not a charge of zero.

In official 2026 reference mode, the Part B amounts represent total monthly Part B premiums for the applicable tier. The Part D amounts represent only the income adjustment; your plan’s own drug premium is additional. The Part B premium guide explains the standard premium and deductible, while the Social Security COLA calculator helps compare a benefit increase with a Medicare deduction.

Use scenarios without treating them as instructions

You can compare a baseline income amount with another amount to understand how a proposed distribution or gain might affect a tier. Keep a note of the mode, filing status, and income year used in each comparison. The calculator operates in your browser, and the inputs do not leave your device. It does not retrieve your return or communicate with SSA.

A transaction can affect taxes, cash flow, and later benefits as well as Medicare. This tool does not decide whether a Roth conversion, asset sale, or withdrawal is appropriate. For a longer view of spending from savings, compare the assumptions in the retirement withdrawal calculator. Its projections and this Medicare estimate answer separate parts of an income plan.

If your income has fallen

After a qualifying life-changing event, you may ask SSA to use more recent income. Work stoppage or reduction, a spouse’s death, marriage, divorce, and loss of pension income are examples. Read SSA’s instructions for lowering IRMAA and the evidence requirements on Form SSA-44. Review your determination notice promptly so that you understand the process and any applicable review deadline.

Frequently asked questions

What income is used for 2027 IRMAA?

The usual starting point is your 2025 federal income tax return. SSA uses the lookback rules and the information available to it. A qualifying event, corrected return, or other case-specific circumstance may require a different determination.

What is MAGI for IRMAA?

It is adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest. The standard deduction does not reduce this IRMAA measure. Use the tax return figures rather than subtracting household expenses or estimating income from bank deposits.

Can I appeal IRMAA?

You can ask SSA to review its determination. The right procedure depends on why the amount should change. A qualifying life-changing event may use Form SSA-44; incorrect tax information or another disagreement may require a different review process described in your notice.

Does IRMAA apply to Part D?

Yes, an income-related adjustment can apply to prescription drug coverage as well as Part B. The Part D adjustment is separate from the premium charged by your plan. The calculator does not estimate the plan-specific premium.

When will CMS release the official 2027 IRMAA brackets?

We do not have a verified release date. The current data distinguishes projected 2027 boundaries from official 2026 reference amounts. Check the sources and update log for the publication status before relying on a premium total.
