The 2027 adjustments are 3.6% for CSRS, 2.6% for eligible FERS annuities, and 3.6% for SSI. These programs use different eligibility and payment rules. Select the benefit you receive before entering a monthly amount; a shared inflation announcement does not mean every recipient gets the same increase.

Why FERS and CSRS have different adjustments

CSRS uses the full applicable cost-of-living adjustment. FERS follows a statutory formula: when the CPI-W adjustment is no more than 2%, eligible annuities receive that full adjustment. Above 2% and through 3%, the FERS adjustment is 2%. Above 3%, the full adjustment is reduced by 1 percentage point. For 2027, the published FERS result is 2.6%.

The OPM cost-of-living guidance explains eligibility and administration. Review the CSRS and FERS handbook rules when an individual retirement history is involved. A percentage comparison is useful, but it does not replace checking the annuity category and dates on your record.

FERS eligibility is checked at the effective date

For the general FERS age rule, determine whether you are at least 62 as of December 1, 2026. Entering an age you expect to reach later in 2027 can incorrectly suggest eligibility. Disability, survivor, and certain special-provision retirement benefits have exceptions; an age-only calculator cannot decide whether a particular exception applies.

The first eligible annual adjustment may be prorated for a partial year on the annuity roll. A simple monthly-benefit multiplication assumes the full applicable adjustment and does not reconstruct your initial eligibility history. Compare the result with OPM’s notice, particularly after a recent retirement, a change in benefit type, or a disability annuity calculation.

SSI amounts are federal maximums

The 2027 federal SSI payment standards are $1,029 monthly for an eligible individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple. They increase from the 2026 federal standards of $994 and $1,491. These are federal amounts only. State supplements are separate and are not included in the maximums shown here.

The resource limits remain $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. A payment adjustment is not a general increase in every SSI eligibility threshold. Countable income, resources, living arrangements, and other eligibility rules can cause an actual payment to be below the federal maximum.

The SSI adjustment starts with payments made December 31, 2026. Use the SSA annual factsheet to distinguish payment standards from earnings-test amounts used by the retirement program. SSI and Social Security retirement are different programs, even when someone receives both.

Use the calculator for a gross-payment comparison

Choose FERS, CSRS, or SSI and enter the current recurring amount for that benefit. The result estimates the gross change under the selected rule. Withholding, insurance premiums, offsets, income changes, and other deductions can make a deposit differ from the calculator’s result. Review the old and new statement line by line to identify the reason.

Do not add the percentages for different programs and apply the combined result to household income. Estimate each eligible benefit separately, then combine the dollar amounts for budgeting. For SSI, confirm whether the entered payment includes a state supplement or an income-related reduction before interpreting the comparison.

Plan alongside Social Security and Medicare

The Social Security COLA calculator covers retirement benefits and Part B deductions. The VA COLA guide explains why its expected adjustment needs separate confirmation. Keep those notices distinct from an OPM annuity notice or an SSI determination.

If your retirement income affects Medicare premiums, consult the 2027 IRMAA brackets. IRMAA depends on tax-return income under its own definition, not simply the gross annuity or total benefit deposits. The federal tax brackets page also explains why taxable income and Medicare MAGI require separate calculations.

Frequently asked questions

Does every FERS retiree receive the full adjustment?

No. The general age requirement, exceptions, and possible first-year proration matter. Check age at the effective date and your annuity category. OPM’s individual calculation controls when a general estimate does not reflect your retirement history.

Are SSI maximums guaranteed payments?

No. The amounts shown are federal payment standards before individual eligibility and countable-income rules are applied. State supplements are separate. Your payment can differ from the federal maximum even if the COLA percentage is the same.

Can I use my bank deposit as the starting amount?

A gross recurring benefit from your statement is usually more useful for a COLA comparison. A deposit may already reflect deductions, offsets, or an unusual adjustment. Match the calculator’s benefit category to the statement before comparing results.

Does the SSI COLA increase the resource limits?

The published SSI resource limits shown here remain unchanged. Do not apply the COLA percentage to those limits. Review SSA’s current eligibility guidance when balances, income, or living arrangements change.
